Durham University is a public university located in Durham, England. The university was founded in 1883 and is the third oldest university in Wales. It is the first recognized university in England in more than 600 years after Oxford and Cambridge, and is thus the third oldest university in the UK.

This university is a member of the Russell Group, previously a member of the 1994 Universities Group.

Russel Group is an association of the most elite research universities in the UK, which also includes Cambridge and Oxford. Their graduates hold 61% of all UK jobs requiring tertiary education, despite the fact that they represent only 17% of all tertiary graduates. Russell Group members award 60% of all doctoral degrees obtained in the United Kingdom.

Durham University is the 4th UK university according to the Guardian 2021. Durham University is recognized as one of the leading universities in the world, which is confirmed by its position in the ranking of the top 100 universities in the world QS World University Rankings 2021, where it is ranked 86th. What’s more, a record-breaking 19 courses from Durham are ranked in the top 100 by the QS World University Rankings for 2020 subjects, including 11 of them in the top 50.

With 30 subjects ranked in the Top 10 in England by Complete National Universities, Durham is one of four universities (along with Oxford, Cambridge and Imperial College London) where more than 90 percent of their subjects are in the top 10 in this ranking.

At the moment, over 20 thousand students are studying at the university. In 2017, Durham had the highest graduate employment rate of any UK university, with 97.9% of graduates working or continuing their studies three and a half years after graduation. In 2015, Durham was ranked 47th in the world (8th in the UK) in the QS Global Employment Pilot Ranking.

Durham University owns a 227.8-hectare (563 acre) estate that includes over 300 buildings, many of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The estate is split into two separate locations: Durham City and the Royal Stockton Campus. The two places are connected by a free shuttle bus. One of Durham’s top public attractions is the 7.3 hectares (18 acres) Botanical Garden, founded in 1970.
