The US education system is flexible and offers a wide variety of institutions. After high school, students can attend a community college, junior college, or university, earn a bachelor's degree, and then pursue a master's or doctoral degree.

However, American education cannot be perceived as a uniform system with identical rules for all universities. Much educational authority rests with the states, and colleges and universities themselves enjoy significant academic autonomy. Therefore, curricula, admissions requirements, assessment systems, and instructional organization may vary.

This is especially important for students from Uzbekistan: when choosing a university, it is important to consider not only its ranking, but also the specific program, requirements, cost, and format of study.

How the education system works in the United States

The American education system can be roughly divided into school and higher education levels.

School education is usually referred to as K–12: from kindergarten to 12th grade. After completing school, students move on to higher education.

The main levels can be represented as follows:

Level

Degree or result

Estimated duration

Elementary School

Primary education

5–6 years

Middle School

Secondary education

2–3 years

High School

High School Diploma

4 years

Community College

Associate Degree

about 2 years

College / University

Bachelor's Degree

about 4 years

Graduate School

Master's Degree

usually 1–2 years

Doctoral School

PhD and other doctoral degrees

several years

The duration of individual programs may vary. For example, the length of study for a master's degree depends on the university and the program chosen.

It's also important to understand that American education is decentralized. There is no single federal authority that sets uniform curricula for all schools and universities. A significant portion of decisions are made by states, local authorities, and the educational institutions themselves.

This is why two universities in different states may offer different requirements and curricula.

School education in the USA

The school system usually includes three main levels.

Elementary School

Primary school is designed for young children. At this stage, basic knowledge in mathematics, reading, writing, natural sciences, and social studies is developed.

Middle School

Secondary school is a transitional stage between primary and high school education. The number of teachers and subjects studied increases.

High School

High school includes grades 9–12. It is at this stage that students have more opportunities to choose their subjects and their level of difficulty.

Advanced courses may be offered in high school, such as Advanced Placement (AP)Such programs allow you to study individual subjects at a higher level.

Upon completion of High School, the student receives High School Diploma, which is used for further admission to a college or university.

It is important for international applicants to check in advance how their high school education compares with the requirements of a specific American university.

Higher education in the USA

After school, a student can choose one of several options.
