Queen Mary University of London is a public research university. It is a member of the federal University of London, which is part of the Russel Group of top UK universities. Compared to other universities in the city, Queen Mary's campuses are the largest self-contained study area in London.<\/p>

The story of Queen Mary begins with the founding of the Royal Hospital Medical College in 1785. This college educated the first female doctor in the United Kingdom, Elizabeth Blackwell. The institution went through many changes after the Second World War and within a few decades became one of the leading universities in the world. Today, Queen Mary University of London offers undergraduate, masters and doctoral programmes in a wide range of disciplines. More than 33,000 students attend academic classes on university campuses; 41% of these students come to England from 170 countries to receive a first-class education. Students enrolled at Queen Mary can expect many benefits such as three faculties, hundreds of higher degree programmes, several modern campuses, a multicultural student body, experienced teachers and a wide range of leisure activities.<\/p>

\u2022 Among former employees and students are nine Nobel Prize laureates.
\u2022 Research by Professors Jonathan Grigg and Chris Griffiths showed how air pollution affects children and was instrumental in the creation of the London Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ).
\u2022 Astronomers led an international team of scientists who discovered a planet orbiting Proxima Centauri, the closest star to the solar system.
\u2022 In 2018, researchers successfully sequenced 100,000 whole genomes of NHS patients.
\u2022 New techniques for treating patients with trauma and critical bleeding have been developed by Professor Karim Brohi and colleagues. These methods have reduced the mortality rate at the Royal London Hospital by almost 30%. In 2016, the National Health Service approved these techniques as standards for the country.<\/p>

The University occupies five campuses in some of London's most prestigious neighbourhoods. The main one is in Mile End, in the eastern part of the capital. Smithfield (Dentistry and Medicine), Charterhouse Square, Whitechapel and Holborn (Research Centre and Master's School of Law) are some of the other campuses. Mile End Ecological Park is adjacent to the main campus.

The university has invested around \u00a3105 million over the last five years to improve its academic infrastructure. A new 7,700 square metre teaching building was opened as part of the modernisation. A \u00a339 million centre for undergraduates was opened in January 2017.<\/p>

The central campus has lecture theatres, laboratories and a library. There is also a Students' Union building on site which has a meeting hall, sports hall, fitness centre and squash courts. There are also cafes and shops on campus. Nearby there is the best climbing centre in the capital, as well as several tennis courts, a sports stadium and a swimming pool. Students can visit these at an additional cost.<\/p>

The university campus is a unique architectural ensemble. The buildings of the university were built in different years, the GE Fogg building resembles Lego houses, the mathematics department is built in the form of mosaic models, and the student village is built in a futuristic style.<\/p>
